Rules for Entry

Applicants for the new Jose Hess AJDC Design Challenge will be asked to design and create an original piece of jewelry, based on the theme Connection, which will mirror the AJDC Design Theme Projects.  

  • Successful applicants must demonstrate a level of originality and design skill that suggests they will be tomorrow’s leading American designer jewelers.
  • The applicants’ sketches, CAD renderings, jewelry paintings and final projects will be evaluated by AJDC’s master jewelry designers.
  • We welcome all jewelry professionals working in the US to enter the competition. Student work is not eligible.
  • All of the entries must be designed and/or made independently by jewelry professionals.
  • AJDC members, their employees, and relatives of AJDC members are not eligible to enter the competition.
  • One Grand Prize Winner will receive a $15,000 award, and a minimum of six Finalists will receive $1000 each.
  • These finalists’ winning Connection pieces will be exhibited next to AJDC members’ “Connection” expressions, with a gala event in Tucson, Feb 2023.
  • All applicants must be 21 years of age or older.

Questions and Answers

What is the entry fee?

The entry fee is $75. If you are submitting multiple pieces, the entry fee will be charged for each piece.

Who can enter?

We welcome all jewelry professionals working in the US to enter the competition. Student work is not eligible.

All of the entries must be designed and/or made independently by jewelry professionals.

AJDC members, their employees, and relatives of AJDC members are not eligible to enter the competition.

Guidelines for Photographs
  • Do not list your name, company name, logo, or other identifying information in your photographs.
  • Provide a high-res image with a plain background. 
  • Make sure your lighting is strong enough to show the detail in the piece.
  • Do not use props, added design features, or models for your photograph. Pieces should  be shot individually.
Is there an age requirement for participation?

Participants must be 21 years of age or older.

Can I submit more than one work?

Yes, more than one work may be submitted, but each piece will require a full entry fee.

Can I submit a work that was submitted to a different design contest?

The work you submit must be created as a reflection on the design theme of Connection. It is difficult to imagine that a prior design was created with this theme in mind. In any case, any design that has previously won or made it to finals in any other design competition is not eligible.

I use nontraditional jewelry materials in my design. Can I enter?

Alternative materials can be used, but we encourage the use of traditional jewelry metals and gemstones.

I design as part of a team. Can we enter as a team?

A team design may be submitted. However, only one name will be used to represent the design.

When and how will winners be notified?

Winners will be notified via email after juding is complete, in September 2022.

Is this a blind competition? Will judges be able to see who the entrants are when judging?

The judging will be anonymous. Judges will not know the identity of the designers until after the judging is completed and certified. This is why it is important to make sure your pieces and photographs do not include any mention of your brand or name.
